Somatic Therapy

What is somatic therapy?

Somatic Experiencing therapy is different from traditional talk therapy, especially when working with trauma, anxiety and depression.

The foundational belief of this approach is our bodies must lead the way in healing and bringing our entire being back into a state of flow and freedom.

In telling the stories of their lives, I also invite my clients to pay attention to body sensations and use the body's wisdom to complete protective responses they were unable to complete in the past. Unresolved movement connected to fight, flight and freeze can build up in our bodies. These incomplete protective responses lead to symptoms such as anxiety, aggression, depression, disconnection from others and physical pain.

While I'm paying attention to the content of my client's presenting concerns, I am also listening to the body's slight and subtle movements. From these small expressions, we learn what the body needs to do to heal.

In a Somatic Experiencing session, a client may not even need to share the details of a particular trauma but we can still do the work without much specific content. The goal of treatment is to increase body awareness and equip clients to ride the waves of emotion and body sensation in daily life.

What to expect during somatic therapy

Our minds and bodies like to know what to prepare for when entering into an unknown experience. Every client’s story and therapy experience is unique but there are some commonalities to the experience that might be helpful for you to know.
